OPTIONS TO PROSTHETICS
Many high level amputees decide that they can get around faster and easier with crutches rather than use a prosthesis. Once we take our legs off, the prosthetic users also must rely on our crutches for mobility. Still others are unwilling or unable to use crutches and prefer a wheelchair or scooter. The choice of using crutches, cane, walker or wheelchair, or any combination of assistive devices is a personal decision, and should be made by the individual himself. You should NOT be pushed by your doctor, husband, wife, parent, CP, or PT into choosing how you are to get around. Dont limit your mobility by arbitrarily getting locked into using only one assistive device. Instead, familiarize yourself as to the various options available and experiment with various devices to find the best solution for your needs. The choices may change throughout your life, and your activities. This is NOT a contest, ALL options are equally valid. Most of us will use some sort of combination which works best for on an individual basis. "Sometimes I use my prosthesis with a cane. I have 2 kinds of crutches, a regular pair that I use around the house and a collapsible pair I use when I go out. I also use a wheelchair when I go out without my leg, for long distances or for traveling." Bob, HP This section deals with your options of how to get out and about without an artificial leg. I also present whats new in assistive aids, address some common problems and offer some solutions and resources. Any hints, tips or resources you may be able to offer are welcome and appreciated. Two articles previously published in the ACA magazine, "inMotion" are now available online: "Invaluable Assistance" published in the Nov/Dec 2002 issue covers the topic of crutches and canes: Klinck, Beverly. “Invaluable Assistance.” Nov/Dec 2002, pp. 26-28.
