SUPPORT NETWORK
Having the support of other amputees can be invaluable to one's recovery. Initially I wanted all Hemipelvectomies and Hip-disarticulations (HP or HD) to participate in the Support Network. However, I have since learned that not all amputees make good peer counselors. Experienced amputees who have successfully made the transition to a new life are the people best qualified to help. Better yet are those who have the information and resources available on hand and have the objectivity and listening skills acquired by the peer support training courses offered by the Amputee Coalition of America National Peer Network. However, this is not mandatory and many veteran amputees have come forward to share their experience. To participate in the Support Network, E-mail to christina@hphdhelp.org or write to the address at the bottom of this page. Please provide a short biography about yourself and only that personal information you feel comfortable in sharing. Pictures are encouraged in electronic format, preferably in JPG format as an attachment to an e-mail. Most importantly, indicate if you are willing to have others contact you, either by e-mail or phone. In the interest of personal privacy, only first names and e-mail addresses will be published on this list. Be aware that by going public, you may receive unwanted and sometimes inappropriate contact from strangers. If you are interested in participating in the Support Network, but prefer not to go public with personal information, I have created an alternative "databank" with names, phone numbers and e-mail addresses which will be shared privately with your expressed permission. Each individual on this list is willing to be contacted by others and will try to answer your questions. The list is loosely organized by geographical location, with a separate section for Internal Hemipelvectomies. Read through them all to realize you are truly not alone anymore. Look for someone in your area, similar age, sex or interests for contact. USA -
