The best way to see that in fact we hips and hemi’s can and do walk is in person, so don’t feel shy to contact us on the support list. Another option is to see videos, although there is not one good, non-commercial, educational video that illustrates this point, a few videos do exist, all available from the following sources.

If calling, ask for Don Stadick, then request video #646V028, "Hip-disarticulation gait training".  The tape costs $15.  This tape was intended as an educational video for prosthesists.  It is an excellent example showing how a HD can use a prosthesis successfully.  In the author's opinion, it is the most educational and least commercial.

Ask for the video of a hip-disarticulation (Cathy) who is shown functioning exceptionally well in her new prosthesis. However, keep in mind she is an athlete and not necessarily an average example.

Request the hip-disarticulation and hemipelvectomy video specifically. It portrays a number of clients in varying degrees of abilities and rehab levels. The initial section is worthwhile viewing for understanding current concepts in socket fit.

What would be highly valuable is a non-commercial, educational video, for both patients and the professionals, which will illustrate how we hips and hemi’s walk and function in the ordinary activities of daily living, with and without our legs. If anyone is willing to participate in this project, please contact the web author at the address shown below.
